We, the undersigned, express our deep concern over the imminent risk of execution facing Gholamreza Khani Shekarab, a Turkish political prisoner from Ardabil.
According to reports published by human rights sources, Gholamreza Khani Shekarab has been sentenced to death on charges of “espionage” and transferred from Evin Prison to Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj, a transfer widely regarded in many Iranian execution cases as a deeply alarming sign that an execution may be imminent. Reports also indicate that no clear or transparent information has been made public regarding the judicial process, the details of his case, his access to an independent lawyer, or whether his fundamental legal rights have been respected.
We emphasize that issuing and carrying out a death sentence in cases marked by security-related accusations, opaque judicial proceedings, security pressure, and possible denial of a fair trial constitutes a clear violation of the right to life and the fundamental principles of human rights. Charges such as “espionage” have repeatedly been used in the Islamic Republic of Iran through vague and closed-door processes, without the possibility of independent oversight, processes that raise serious concerns about forced confessions, coercion by security agencies, and denial of the right to an adequate defense.
As an Azerbaijani Turkish political prisoner, Gholamreza Khani Shekarab now faces the threat of execution in a context where activists and prisoners from Iran’s non-Persian national, linguistic, and ethnic communities have repeatedly been subjected to security-related accusations, severe punishments, and discriminatory treatment. We believe that political or civil activism, and any form of social association, must never be used as a pretext for securitization, denial of due process, or the issuance of a death sentence.
We call on the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran to:
-
Immediately halt the execution of Gholamreza Khani Shekarab;
-
Revoke the death sentence issued against him;
-
Guarantee his access to an independent lawyer, his family, and necessary medical care;
-
Review his case transparently and in accordance with international standards of fair trial and due process;
-
End the use of security-related accusations to impose severe and irreversible punishments, including the death penalty.
We also call on international human rights organizations, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, organizations defending the right to life, anti-death penalty groups, and the international community to respond immediately to the case of Gholamreza Khani Shekarab and to exert urgent and effective pressure to stop his execution.
Stop the execution. The right to life of Gholamreza Khani Shekarab must be protected.
We demand the immediate suspension of the execution order, the revocation of the death sentence, the guarantee of a fair trial, and an end to the issuance and implementation of death sentences in opaque and security-related cases.
