We, the undersigned, express our deep concern over the imminent risk of execution facing at least 21 Baluch political prisoners held in prisons across the Islamic Republic of Iran. We urgently call on international institutions, human rights organizations, United Nations Special Rapporteurs, and all defenders of human rights to take immediate action to prevent this looming human tragedy.
According to published reports, these prisoners have been prosecuted and sentenced to death on charges such as “enmity against God,” “corruption on earth,” and “membership in anti-government groups,” accusations that, in many cases, have been brought forward without transparent evidence and through fundamentally unfair judicial processes. Reports further indicate that several of these prisoners were subjected to physical and psychological torture, threats, prolonged interrogations, and pressure to extract forced confessions during detention.
Many of the accused were denied access to independent legal counsel of their choosing, and their court proceedings were conducted without adherence to basic fair trial principles. Families of these prisoners have repeatedly reported being kept uninformed about their loved ones’ conditions, while also facing security pressure, restrictions on visitation, and intimidation by state security agencies. Such practices not only undermine the legitimacy of these death sentences, but they also constitute a clear violation of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s international obligations regarding the rights of defendants and detainees.
Among those sentenced to death are individuals whose cases make these proceedings even more shocking and alarming, including Nasimeh Eslamzehi, a mother of two children, and Soleiman Shahbakhsh, who, according to reports, was only 12 years old at the time of his arrest. Issuing a death sentence against someone who was a child at the time of the alleged offense is a direct violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the most fundamental principles of human rights.
The names of Adham Narouei, Farshid Hassanzehi, and Hossein Shahouzehi, detainees associated with the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, also appear among those facing the serious threat of execution. Concerns grow even deeper given that many of these cases have been handled in a heavily securitized environment, far from independent media scrutiny and outside meaningful oversight by human rights observers.
The execution of political and ideological prisoners, especially in cases built on torture and forced confessions, is not justice; it is a blatant violation of human dignity and fundamental human rights. The continuation of this pattern against Baluch citizens has intensified concerns over systematic discrimination, ethnic repression, and the instrumental use of the death penalty to spread fear and terror.
By signing this petition, we declare:
-
No to executions;
-
No to torture and forced confessions;
-
No sentence should be carried out without an independent and fair trial.
-
The lives of Baluch prisoners must not become victims of repression, discrimination, and fabricated security cases.
We call on the United Nations, the Human Rights Council, the European Union, international human rights organizations, and all governments committed to human rights to take immediate and concrete action to halt these executions, pressure the Islamic Republic of Iran to uphold its international obligations, and hold perpetrators of human rights violations accountable.
Every moment of silence in the face of these sentences may cost the lives of people who have already been stripped of their most basic human rights.
