State-approved executions and organized killings are among the most effective tools of repression in the Islamic Republic of Iran. According to statistics, despite the loud claims of defending people's rights and civil society by the reformists in the executive branch following the presidential elections, executions in prisons continue extensively.
In the past week, eight people have been executed in Iranian prisons, and every day, the noose claims more lives. In just the past two weeks, two female political prisoners have been sentenced to death.
Sharifeh Mohammadi, a member of the "Coordination Committee to Help Form Workers' Organizations" more than a decade ago, was arrested in the fall of 2023. On July 4, 2024, she was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Rasht on charges of "baghi" [an Islamic jurisprudence term meaning rebel].
Pakhshan Azizi, a journalist, social worker, and Kurdish political prisoner who has been held in Evin Prison for about a year, was sentenced to death on July 21, 2024, by Judge Iman Afshari of Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court.
Verisheh Moradi, another Kurdish political prisoner, is also imprisoned on charges of "baghi."
Creating a widespread and nationwide movement against executions is one of the most urgent issues for civil activists and human rights defenders in the current situation. As the "No to Executions, Yes to Free Life" campaign, we call on all active institutions and organizations in this field to engage in a unified and cohesive struggle to pave the way for the freedom of all political prisoners and a broad fight against the death penalty.
