On January 7, 2024, the inhabitants of Qara Qeshlaq, a village within Salmas City, West Azarbaijan province, initiated a series of peaceful protests. They aimed to oppose the construction of the Kimya Sodium Carbonate Factory, which is projected to span 450 hectares of local pastures. Subsequent demonstrations were met with harsh responses from police and security forces, including the use of bullets, tear gas, and physical violence. Additionally, 70 villagers were detained by Salmas Intelligence Department agents, with reports of threats and abuse surfacing.

Environmental and Health Concerns:

Outdated Production Methods: The proposed factory will utilize antiquated production techniques from the 1800s to produce sodium carbonate for the Kaveh Glass Industrial Group. This method is not only inefficient but also highly polluting.

Impact on Lake Urmia: The factory's effluent is planned to be discharged into Lake Urmia, posing a significant threat to the lake's ecosystem and potentially accelerating its degradation.

Salt Extraction Hazards: The required salt for the factory will be sourced from the dry bed of Lake Urmia. This process, lacking in environmental safeguards, risks disturbing the lake's bed, altering its natural topography, and increasing the likelihood of salt dust storms, potentially laden with heavy metals and other harmful substances.

Water Resource Concerns: The factory's intent to use underground water sourced by drilling deep wells raises severe concerns. The region's water supply, already stressed by the construction of the Zola Dam and significant annual land subsidence (averaging 10 cm in the Salmas Plain), could be further depleted, exacerbating existing environmental crises.

Demands:

In light of these pressing issues, we, the undersigned, urgently call for the immediate cessation of the Kimya Sodium Carbonate Factory's construction in the pastures of Qara Qeshlaq village. Our demands are driven by the imperative to protect our environment, preserve the health and well-being of residents, and maintain the ecological balance of the region.

We urge the responsible authorities to consider this project's profound and potentially irreversible consequences and prioritize our community's ecological integrity and sustainable development.
