Unprecedented Executions of Baluchi Citizens in Iran

Since the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran, an unprecedented number of Baluch citizens have been sentenced to death in prisons in different cities of Iran. Execution is a means of repression in the Islamic Republic, whose role is prominent in the Baluchistan region.

Almost simultaneously with nationwide protests in Iran, from August 20, 2022, to December 31, 2022, at least 90 Baluch citizens have been executed in various country prisons. This statistic is the number of people whose identity has been verified. But it should be known that some other Baluch people who have been executed do not have birth certificates. The Islamic Republic keeps killing Baluch people quickly and without their names being published in the media.

According to Amnesty International's report dated July 27, 2022, at least 65 people, i.e., 26% of those executed in 2022, belonged to the Baluchi people, while the Baluch make up five percent of Iran's population.

One should note that the execution of Baluch people in various prisons of the country is typically carried out in fast-paced courts without the indicted having the right to choose a lawyer. In most cases, executions were carried out without notifying the families of the executed and without a final meeting before the execution of the sentence. Some of them were under the age of 18 when they were arrested and were considered children. Many executions were carried out for the crime of "narcotics." Still, the knowledge of the families of those executed among the activists increases the possibility of political execution under the false narcotics trials. Those convicted of drug trafficking never go through an impartial court and fair legal process. In our opinion, the Islamic Republic issues many verdicts under the crime of drug trafficking to justify political executions.

The execution of the Baluch people has been going on in silence for decades. Charges are often trumped up without due process and the possibility of a legal defense. Nearly 30% of executions in Iran are carried out in Baluchistan. Some of the executed were children under 18 years old when arrested.

We want the world to act now, and the international community must oblige to stop the executions in Iran and Baluchistan. The voice of the Baluchi people must be heard.

We demand an immediate halt to the execution of Baluch citizens and others sentenced to death, and the death penalty must be abolished forever.
