We Stand by Salman Rushdie
We, Iranian writers and poets, condemn the attempt to assassinate Salman Rushdie and hold the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran directly responsible for this incident because, since February 14, 1989, when Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the IRI, issued a fatwa to kill Salman Rushdie, this writer’s life has always been in danger.
Since 1979, IRI operatives have targeted and killed many of its opponents and critics. Terrorism of the Islamic Republic has always been borderless, so solidarity to defend Rushdie and freedom of expression knows no borders either. Rushdie is one of us. If promoting and performing religious ceremonies is free, criticism and satire, presentation of creative content, and examination of historical facts about any religion by writers and artists should also be free and without fear of terror and murder.We stand by Rushdie.
