Officials’ Disregard for the Death of Animals in Iran’s Zoos
The neglect of zoo animals continues. Last month, on June 11, 2022, Kija, a beautiful female leopard from the Eram Zoo, who had a chronic wound, died of a long-term spinal cord infection with great pain and suffering without receiving adequate and proper treatment. In May 2022, two captive-born cheetah cubs lost their lives due to the inexperience of the medical team and “wrong feeding.” In May 2021, the African zebra at the Safadasht Zoo fell into a ditch during an unattended transfer, broke its leg, and then perished en route. In December 2020, the injured female White Tiger of Eram Garden died without treatment.
A wildlife expert told Rokna News Agency that many of the zoo deaths in Iran remain hidden with the authorities’ complicity: “A lion was lost in the Alborz province zoo. Several tigers have died at the Mashhad Zoo, but none have been reported.”
The wildlife expert says, “The condition of the Urumia Zoo is catastrophic, and its animals have nothing to eat. The zoos of Dezful, Hoveyzeh, and Sirjan are also in dire condition. All the animals in Sirjan Zoo have perished due to lack of care, leaving only one lion. Thieves have stolen even the equipment of this center, and the lion is kept in deplorable conditions.”
Seeing cases of disease and death of animals in non-standard zoos in Iran and the negligence of the authorities is painful for us animal-friendly citizens. These animals get sick, suffer for a long time, and eventually die, while their natural life could span many more years.
Kija was an Iranian leopard breed that was genetically valuable, and the reproduction of this genus of leopards is vital for Iranian wildlife. The Iranian Department of Environment is responsible for monitoring zoos. This organization seems indifferent to the country’s conservation and reproduction of wildlife species. These species are on the verge of extinction. We call on the authorities to oblige the medical and expert staff of the country’s zoos to comply with international standards and to hold accountable and dismiss the staff responsible for the deaths of animals. //
