Immediate Threat of Execution for Seven Kurdish Prisoners of Conscience
Seven Kurdish prisoners of conscience, namely Anwar Khezri, Ayoub Karimi, Davoud Abdollahi, Farhad Salimi, Ghassem Abesteh, Kamran Sheikheh, and Khosrow Basharat, are in imminent danger of execution in Rajai Shahr Prison.
These seven Sunni prisoners were arrested from early December 2009 to late January 2010 in West Azerbaijan. They were first transferred to the detention center of the Ministry of Intelligence in Urumia and then to the prisons of West Azerbaijan. According to Amnesty International, these prisoners were severely tortured, and their trial lasted only five minutes! They are charged with “membership in Salafi groups.”
Anwar Khezri wrote in a letter from prison in February 2020 that he had been tortured for 56 days in detention at the Ministry of Intelligence, including repeated beatings to the chest, head, and sole of his feet, according to Amnesty International, citing credible sources. Khezri has attempted suicide and lost a lot of blood. He wrote that he was forced to make “confessions” under torture. Another prisoner, Khosrow Besharat, was beaten several times with electric cables while tied to a bed, then hung from the ceiling with his hands tied for a long time and heard the screams other prisoners during the night. Following three weeks of torture, he was forced to sign a pre-written “confession.”
We, the signatories, call on the judiciary to overturn these inhuman and unjust sentences as soon as possible and respond positively to the request for an appeal and a fair and public trial for these Kurdish prisoners. ///
