We, a group of LGBTQ and women’s rights activists, who have always systematically experienced discrimination, inequality, pressure and detention by the security institutions of the Islamic Republic, support the nationwide protests of Iranian teachers in order to support the convergence of demand-oriented social movements.
In particular, we support the demands of the Coordinating Council of Educators’ Trade Union Organizations, including this council’s objection to the incomplete approval of the rating bill, and the complete failure to implement equalization of pensioners’ rights. In agreement with this council, we also demand the release of all teachers who were arrested and imprisoned for union activities, including Rasul Badaghi, Ismail Abdi, Mohammad Reza Ramzanzadeh, Yaqoub Yazdani and Mehdi Fathi. We also believe that teachers like Mohammad Habibi who were fired for union activity should be rehired with their previous contracts.
The organizations that organized the new round of trade union protests of Iran’s educators did not come to the streets only to improve the livelihood and trade union rights of working and retired teachers; They came to defend the rights of students to access education that has been compromised by privatization and contract hiring of teachers. This is a clear example of convergence in demand-oriented movements, which can also be a map of the convergence of other movements, including the movement of workers, women, students, and the LGBTQ movement.
We stand side by side with protesting teachers and declare that social and union movements are not isolated and separate from each other but homogeneous and continuous and our freedom and equality depend on accompanying each other, organizing and demanding our rights.
Our address to Iranian teachers in protest rallies and demonstrations is that we understand the difficulty and necessity of your protest and are your supporters and companions.
This statement is completely independent and has no affiliation with any organization or institution.
