Statement by 20 Political, Civil, and Cultural Activists Regarding the Incident in Mashhad at the Memorial Ceremony for the Late Khosrow Alikordi
What took place in Mashhad during the memorial ceremony for the late Khosrow Alikordi on December 12, 2025, was a condensed portrayal of the alarming state of freedom and security in today’s Iran and, consequently, of the governing authorities’ inefficiency and evasion of responsibility.
As in the past, security forces, instead of safeguarding the right to hold a memorial ceremony and ensuring the safety of citizens, attacked those in attendance and arrested approximately forty individuals, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ms. Narges Mohammadi. This action more clearly than ever demonstrates that the suppression of civil voices under the pretext of “disorder” is a pre-planned spectacle.
We emphasize that the violent arrest of political and civil activists is not a response to any alleged “disruption of public order,” but rather part of an ongoing process of deliberate restriction of civil society and the silencing of voices that insist on the right to self-determination, human dignity, and a peaceful transition away from authoritarianism.
Without doubt, full responsibility for any physical or psychological harm inflicted upon those detained rests directly with the Islamic Republic and its agents.
We, the signatories of this statement,
once again stress that the country’s profound political and social deadlock can only be resolved by restoring sovereignty to the people.
We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all freedom-seeking individuals, especially those who were arrested at this memorial ceremony.
