Iran today stands at a perilous crossroads. The country is engulfed in overlapping crises: economic hardship, deepening poverty and inequality, entrenched corruption, environmental collapse, pervasive discrimination, and a profound loss of public trust in government. The state suffers from a chronic legitimacy deficit, compounded by mounting crises in water, energy, foreign policy, and governance, all of which are consequences of the ruling theocratic order.

Alongside these systemic failures, every avenue of reform has been blocked. Individual and collective freedoms are systematically repressed, leaving no possibility of change within the existing framework. The violent suppression of popular uprisings, from the bloody protests of November 2019 to the Women, Life, Freedom movement, has again made clear that the government is neither willing nor able to respond to the people’s rightful demands. Instead, it meets them with brutal force.

If this trajectory continues, it is not difficult to imagine disastrous outcomes: foreign aggression, such as the criminal military offensive of the Israeli government, civil or regional war, the reproduction of the current despotic order in new guises, and the intensification of national crises. Yet, despite these looming threats, there remains another, more hopeful path:

The establishment of a democratic, secular, and effective republic, rooted in the will of the Iranian people, capable of addressing the country’s problems. Such a republic must be founded on human rights, freedom, social justice, broad participation, national sovereignty, and the elimination of systematic discrimination and corruption.

Our Vision for a Democratic Republic

The undersigned, while rejecting war, violence, and destructive costs for Iran, envision the country’s future along the following principles:

  1. Democratic Participation: Maximizing the ability of citizens to legislate, decide, and govern through elections, referenda, councils, NGOs, and trade unions.
  2. Equal Rights: Protecting the rights of all individuals -- ethnic, religious, gender, and sexual minorities -- based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and combating inequality and discrimination.
  3. Political Pluralism: Safeguarding the right of all democratic political and intellectual movements to organize, form parties, and compete.
  4. Freedom of Expression: Guaranteeing a secure environment in which individuals and media can speak freely.
  5. Privacy and Individual Liberty: Respecting personal freedoms and the private lives of all citizens.
  6. Social Welfare: Ensuring basic access to education, healthcare, and social welfare for all.
  7. Sustainable Development: Managing resources responsibly, protecting the environment, and adopting policies that guarantee sustainable growth.
  8. Responsible Foreign Policy: Grounding foreign relations in the will of citizens, safeguarding national rights and interests, and pursuing mutual respect with neighbors and the international community.
  9. Civilian Control of Armed Forces: Placing all armed and security forces under the supervision of democratically elected political institutions, with a sole mandate to protect the rights and security of citizens and the nation’s borders.
  10. Independent Judiciary: Establishing a judicial system that upholds justice and human rights, and stands firm against corruption, discrimination, and injustice.

A Call for Dialogue and Solidarity

We believe that by setting forth a shared vision, Iranians can begin to debate and pursue this democratic horizon at the lowest possible cost to the nation. The future of Iran depends on awareness, solidarity, and collective action. We hope for a tomorrow in which no one is deprived of fundamental rights, and in which Iran, free and democratic, can reclaim its rightful place in the world.

Because of security constraints, broader consultation with citizens and activists inside Iran has not been possible. Still, by circulating this statement, every individual becomes part of this front and carries our message of solidarity further.
