Following the recent Israeli airstrike on Tehran’s Evin Prison, a new wave of instability and psychological distress has swept through Iran’s prison system, particularly affecting political prisoners of Azerbaijani origin. In the chaos that followed, and under a series of rash decisions by Iran’s prison authorities, many of these detainees were transferred overnight to the Greater Tehran Prison. Shackled and handcuffed like prisoners of war, they were moved amid the bombardment and insecurity gripping the capital.
This forced relocation took place with no regard for the dignity or rights of those imprisoned. At their new location, conditions have deteriorated further: overcrowding, unsanitary facilities, and a lack of necessities now define their daily existence.
According to reports, health conditions in Greater Tehran Prison are deplorable. There is little access to hygiene or proper nutrition, and in some wards, dozens of inmates are crammed into small rooms with only a single refrigerator. These conditions are not only inhumane, but they also represent a clear violation of international legal standards and fundamental human rights.
We, the undersigned, call on Iranian authorities, oversight institutions, journalists, and public opinion to take immediate action to address the crisis facing Azerbaijani political prisoners.
We also appeal to civil society actors, human rights defenders, legal professionals, international institutions, and all people of conscience: Raise your voice against this unmasked injustice and help bring an end to these degrading and unlawful conditions.
