A Death Sentence for a Student—Yet Another Display of Systemic Injustice
We, the undersigned, express our grave concern over the death sentence issued against Ehsan Faridi, a 22-year-old Azerbaijani political prisoner and engineering student at the University of Tabriz.
Ehsan Faridi was arrested on June 18, 2024, after appearing at Branch 15 of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Tabriz Revolutionary Court. He was later sentenced to death by Branch 3 of the same court, under presiding judge Ali Sheikhloo, on the charge of “corruption on Earth” (efsad fel-arz)—a charge that carries the death penalty under Iran’s penal code. The sentence, issued in January 2025, ignored fundamental principles of fair trial and is currently under appeal at the Supreme Court of Iran.
We believe this verdict is unjust and dangerous for the following reasons:
1. Violation of the Presumption of Innocence:
The charge of corruption on Earth was brought without any credible evidence and relied solely on reports from security agencies.
2. Lack of Independent Legal Representation:
From the outset, Ehsan and his family were denied the right to freely choose legal counsel and were deprived of access to the details of his case.
3. Coerced Confessions Under Duress:
Reliable sources confirm that Ehsan was subjected to intense pressure and threats to extract a confession and that his detention involved severe violations of human dignity.
4. Corruption Within the Prosecutor’s Office:
The indictment against Ehsan was signed by Ali Mousavi Aghdam, a prosecutor who was later dismissed from the judiciary on charges of bribery, corruption, and forgery. How can an indictment issued by such a discredited figure be considered valid?
5. A Pattern of Repression:
Ehsan is neither the first nor the last Azerbaijani student to face harsh charges and inhumane punishment. His case reflects a broader campaign aimed at silencing ethnic minorities, student activists, and voices of dissent in Iran.
Our Demands:
-
Immediate revocation of Ehsan Faridi’s death sentence and a halt to all political and security-related executions in Iran.
-
A new trial that upholds the principles of due process, with the presence of an independent attorney.
-
An independent and transparent investigation into this case, including the role of the dismissed prosecutor.
-
Immediate access to appropriate medical care for Ehsan and enforcement of fundamental rights for all prisoners.
-
An end to the systematic repression of ethnic minorities and critical students.
Ehsan Faridi is not a criminal nor a threat. He is a young student, a critical voice, and a symbol of the structural discrimination faced by ethnic groups, youth, and intellectuals in Iran.
We demand his freedom and the immediate reversal of this unjust sentence.
