A month has transpired since Garmi County of Ardabil province fell victim to devastating floods, and despite the catastrophic loss of life and livelihood, the local authorities have yet to provide adequate assistance.
On May 30, 2023, Garmi County was besieged by torrential rains, resulting in floods that wreaked havoc on homes, farms, and infrastructures across the city and its encompassing villages. This marked the first of three deadly rainfall and flooding bouts until early July. According to experts, such environmental calamity has been unprecedented in the past half-century.
Amid this catastrophe, the water supply network of Garmi and its surrounding villages has been severely damaged, leaving residents without access to potable water. While the Red Crescent and the Department of Water and Wastewater Affairs have commenced drinking water distribution, it remains woefully inadequate. The flood-affected people can only utilize rainwater for their other needs. Both tanker water and rainwater carry significant health risks, given the potential for contamination and the spread of disease.
On June 18, 2023, heavy rain again hit the villages of Garmi and Bileh-Swar, causing widespread flooding and other damaging communication routes and electricity and water supply networks.
The mid-June floods claimed seven lives, injured two, and destroyed houses, livestock, and vehicles in Garmi County. Many homes in Garmi, Beile Sawar, Angot, and the adjacent villages were severely damaged, rendering some uninhabitable.
However, the government's response to the disaster has been dismal, and law enforcement and security agencies have even hindered civil activists from aiding the affected areas.
Apart from homes and transportation routes, the floods also devastated the livestock, water supply network, and farmers' crops in Garmi County. This catastrophe came from a severe drought that destroyed 350,000 hectares of arable land north of Ardabil province. Thus, the flood victims of Garmi City currently face not only a water shortage but also a scarcity of food.
As signatories of this petition, we implore the government bodies and relevant authorities to act swiftly in providing the flood victims with temporary housing in a safe environment. We call for the immediate distribution of sanitary products, water, bread, and other foodstuffs.
Furthermore, we urge a thorough assessment of the damage inflicted upon villagers' homes, gardens, fields, livestock, and agricultural produce. We demand that the relevant authorities speed up compensating villagers for their losses.
